Dangerous amount of I/O operations on SSD

It came to my attention when looking in Activity Monitor.

You can see on the screenshot that Airmail makes 10x the amount of I/O operations than any other app – high writes and reads will severely shorten the lifespan of a SSD.

I can't imagine that a mail client needs to write gigabytes of data daily.

Is this a known issue?

    Check my post: https://airmail.tenderapp.com/help/discussions/airmail-beta-383/599...

I tried to tweet Airmail on twitter, and put post here, I think they were somply avoided the topic at all. I am looking for an alternative now.

Ouch. The issue is a big one, it would be a shame if they keep avoiding acknowledging it.

Right, but they just ignored all my messages, including tweets and the posts here. I have switched to Canary, though I'm still want to stay with Airmail, but all those disks writes are realy scaring me off.

Some said setting several directories to Read Only fixed the issue, I tried, it reduced the writes a lot, but brought some unexpected issues, such as attachments not showing up, etc. So I gave up.

Most probabily is due to the new Search, is rebuilding everithing but will monitor this. Thank you

Thank you for your reply. Note how yesterday morning, when I reported this, Airmail had been running for only a few hours and already wrote 66GB data (yes, sixtysix gigabyte!) on my machine. My email archive is extensive, but this seems quite a lot of writes.

Just ran into the same issue... on a much larger scale. Airmail beta 392 wrote 352GBs while importing a 1.2GB MBOX.

Unacceptable. And the response is unacceptable as well. Monitoring it for now? Really?

    FIX IT!

    Jeez.

Spark should be out soon. May switch to Canary even though it also has some issues. This is just not acceptable.

It'd love it some steps were taken instead of just monitoring it.

There's clearly an issue, and as vocal beta testers, our opinions should at least be taken into priority consideration.

Actually, it's not only about the beta version, I have switched back to MAS version, same thing, issue was still there.

Try to disable any account and identify if one of them is causing the issue. we do not have this happening in any of our systems.

Please report OS and number of accounts type will try to replicate.

I have disabled the Gmail account and monitoring.

Strange that you don't have the issue, actually I am doubt of it. Since we have a thread in our local forum, everybody is reporting this issue.

Some of them said they set following directories to readonly:

    /private/var/folders/5s/j_4_xwf54nj6_fvs62k4yh980000gn/T/it.bloop.airmail2 /Users/XXX/Library/Group Containers/2E337YPCZY.airmail/SharedData/Today/Your-MailBox/Inbox.plist

And then the disk writes get back to a very low level, somehow it doesn't work for me

No, I am not using Today extension, the above information was from some other users, they shared their experiences about how to reduce the Airmail writes, I am not sure if they use Today extension or not.

Two hours running, still have lots of writes, now I have all disabled except one IMAP account enabled, running to see if any changes.

I noticed some of my comments were not displayed. Did you get it?

After 10 hours arunning, with only one IMAP account enabled, and none email received or sent via this account during this period. Please check the screenshots, To be honest, I think there's serious problem in codes. Can you sure you don't have this issue on your side?

I can confirm the amount of writing is better but still somewhat high. FWIW, I've configured only one account (and Exchange account).

I'd like to thanks Leon Guan for the effort he's putting into this.

This is a huge problem. 394 wrote 3GB in just several hours on Yosemite.

Hopefully we can get it fixed soon. Spotify had the same issue until recently, but they finally released a fix after much public outcry.

Yeah, really sad that the problem still persists, I think that's should be way to improve.

I had to stop using Airmail recently, guess will try again once that's an update, hope Airmail can find a way to resolve the issue, a daily several hundreds of GB disk writes is really frightened.

Today I got a new beta release notification. i installed that beta 394. I started it two or so hours ago and already had almost 26GB of writes since then. To me the problems is not fixed and not even improved.
